Determination of anabolic steroids in dietary supplements
by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry
Abstract
Nineteen different dietary supplements, ordered through the internet and intercepted by the Belgian pharmaceutical inspection at the post office, were analyzed by means of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the presence of anabolic steroids. After a methanolic extraction the samples were screened for the presence of 49 compounds. This resulted in almost 60% of the samples being suspected of containing one of these 49 anabolic compounds and being subjected to a confirmatory product ion scan. In all of these suspected samples we were able to confirm at least one anabolic steroid with concentrations between 0.01 and 2.5 mg unit−1 (unit: one capsule or tablet or for liquids: the prescribed dose). The anabolic steroids that was mostly encountered was testosterone (50%) followed by β-boldenone (25%). These results once more confirm the dubious reputation of over-the-counter dietary supplements.

Results & Discussion
The obtained diluted extracts of all 19 dietary supplements were first submitted to the screening protocol. A sample was suspected of containing one of the anabolic steroids when the two chosen diagnostic product ions were simultaneously detected at a comparable retention time to that of the analytical standard.
Using this criterion, 11 dietary supplements were suspected of containing at least one of the anabolic steroids mentioned in Tables 1-3. Most of these suspected supplements showed the two diagnostic product ions for at least 3, one up to 6, anabolic steroids. A summary of the screening results is given in Table 6.
The 11 suspected dietary supplements were submitted to a product ion scan analysis for each of the anabolic steroids which were identified during the screening protocol. The obtained diagnostic fragmentation pattern was compared to that of the analytical standard. Besides the visual interpretation of the results, the illegal presence of an anabolic steroid was confirmed when at least four product ions were present within the maximum permitted tolerances (Table 7) for the relative ion intensities as compared to an analytical standard [10]. The relative retention time also had to be the same (within a 2.5% margin) as in the analytical standard.
...
In all of the 11 suspected supplements at least one anabolic steroid was confirmed using the above described product scan mode or MRM method. In most cases the detected anabolic steroid was testosterone followed by -boldenone, -boldenone and -nortestosterone. The anabolic steroids were only detected in dietary supplements which claimed to contain prohormones. Moreover, in most cases a precursor of the detected anabolic steroid was claimed to be present in the dietary supplements
...
Conclusions
In this study only low concentrations of anabolic steroids were detected in the dietary supplements. From these low concentrations it can be assumed that it is most likely that the anabolic steroids are not deliberately added to the dietary supplements but that they are by-products formed during the synthesis of the prohormones.

There were 19 supplements. 11 of them listed PHs on the label, and all 11 of them tested positive for AAS (in tiny doses). I remember reading somewhere else that one of them was methoxy TRN, but in the study they say what ingredients were on the labels and none of them seem to show anything similar to methoxy TRN.

I don't understand the significance of this, and it is not at all surprising.

I'm not sure what you mean. The point was that all of the PHs they tested also contain trace amounts of the AAS they are intended to convert to. If you mean that that isn't very surprising, fair enough.
It could have been a route for the US government to use to remove PHs like boldione from the market without the time-consuming need to schedule them though.

I asked God for a new car. I didn't get one. So I spoke to a Christian and he said God doesn't work that way. So I stole one and asked God for forgiveness.
